I recently spoke with a colleague caught in the latest healthcare tsunami. When I asked how he
was holding up, he just shook his head and grimaced—enough said. Healthcare leaders often
find themselves navigating politically inflicted chaos, overwhelming complexities, and conflict. To
offer support, I turned to the wisdom of a few seasoned leaders who shared how they fortify
themselves during turbulent times.
Keep Your Eye on Your North Star
Amid healthcare upheaval, staying focused on your long-term vision is crucial. What is the
mission you’re committed to delivering over time? Like a sailor navigating rough seas, your
North Star remains constant even when everything else feels unpredictable. It serves as your
unchanging reference point, keeping you and your team aligned, no matter the external chaos.
Mind the Timing
Just as storms pass, so will the latest healthcare turbulence. When the political or operational
weather is particularly nasty, take it as a cue to pause and practice self-care. If your best efforts feel stalled, don’t internalize the blame. Be kind to yourself. Retreat and rest will help you
recharge and refocus.
Focus on What You Can Control
In times of chaos, asking yourself the right questions is key to maintaining leadership resilience.
What’s within your control? What do you want to create despite the storm? How are you
nurturing relationships with others? As Thomas Merton wisely said, “Do not depend on the hope
of results… in the end, it’s the reality of personal relationships that saves everything.” Staying
grounded in the relationships that matter will ultimately help you weather any storm.
You can do it! Happy Friday!
